The Problem

We seek to eradicate poverty through our Family Literacy Program that works with students, parents, and educators to promote reading, develop writing skills, and strengthen oratory skills. Our Family Literacy program takes place in the City of Atlanta at BEST Academy. Additionally, we have started a leadership academy for underrepresented students in Atlanta called Leadership for Tomorrow. Leadership for Tomorrow provides Atlanta Public Schools high school students with college preparatory materials, mentors, career advisement, oratory coaching, and several other invaluable lessons. Moreover, the Leadership for Tomorrow program is about servant leadership, so all participants create projects to address issues that are salient to them such as domestic violence, environmental sustainability, hunger, and education.

Plan of Action

Tomorrow's Luminaries has two programs: Leadership for Tomorrow and The Family Literacy Program. Leadership for Tomorrow (L4T) is a program that operates as a leadership academy for 9th grade students in Atlanta Public Schools. We work with students to develop their leadership skills, build on academic success, and instill a great sense of social and community responsibility. Each school year, we accept 50 9th graders into the program. These students will work with 50 exceptional college mentors to create community service projects in Atlanta that impact over 100 youth. We will have seminars once a month. We will convene weekly to work on projects. In the past, Leadership for Tomorrow has has bi-monthly meetings with keynote speakers, oratory skills development, and extensive community service projects. Some of our community service projects in the last two years have included a clean-up of City of Atlanta Parks; a cooking demonstration after school for high school students; a sports camp for group home students; and a benefit concert for developing countries' relief efforts. All of the community service projects were created and executed by the high school students with the help the college mentor. The two program directors facilitated meetings and coordinated meals for program participants. The Family Literacy Program is a program that offers evening and weekend classes to families of elementary, middle, and high school students. The curriculum for the Family Literacy program includes reading comprehension skills, writing skills, and basic oratory skills. Additionally, the Family Literacy offers some lessons in basic professional development. This program would be facilitated by the program directors with the assistance of local principals and teachers. In the past year, the literacy program has held writing workshops for 8th grade students and their families in preparation for state-wide writing assessments.
