Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a widely misunderstood neurobiological disorder characterized by tics, involuntary motor involvements and vocalizations.

The Youth Ambassador Training Program for the National Tourette Syndrome Association trains teens to raise awareness about TS; to advocate for themselves and for others and to educate their peers and younger children with accurate information by going into classrooms, schools and clubs to teach understanding, sensitivity and tolerance of TS and its symptoms, while displacing the myths and stereotypes that are often attributed to and associated with this misunderstood and misdiagnosed disorder.

My name is Arthur Hawxhurst and I live in Dover NH. I am about to turn 40 years old and am presently starting my thirteenth year as a Licensed Massage Therapist, a very successful Massage Therapist that is. I have suffered from Tourettes since i was very young and have been traumatized by the abuse I received both as a young child and from today as a mature, well rounded successful adult. It was not until recently that I researched my condition and have finally accepted my condition at a very late stage in life. I preach to everyone to accept who they are as a person but I have only recently done what I say. I feel a lot better now that I accept my disorder, but still suffer from the loneliness it provides.

My form of tourettes shows itself with facial tic's and very rapid blinking, usually all at once. I can hide it whith one or two people around but loose all controll when there is too much excitement. I also suffer from ADHD but have this under controll by racing in marathons and IRONMAN Triathlons, but am at the end of my rope physically. I have recently finished College with a BA in History and am currently enroled in a Nursing Programe that starts this comming fall semester. I am so very well versed in many aspects of life and use my alone time to better myself in practical ways. There are too many to list now but this first letter is to physically write and admit my disorder. My next step is to do something to teach others of what is really going on and to accept other people's differences.

I have been bullied my whole life and feel so helpless. I am a Black belt in Kenpo Karate but feel that violence will not end my battles in life so I prefer to remain secluded so I do not encounter any confrontations. I hope that by now acting on my disorder I will allow myself to come out into the world a more confident person, but who knows?

Thanx for reading,

arthur Hwxhurst
