The Problem

So you're young, trying to find you're way in life and not sure exactly how to feel about this crazy thing they call "growing up?" Then maybe we have something for you. Transitions Radio is a new, up and coming, radio podcast dedicated to providing a media platform that discusses impacting, insightful and inspirational content for young men and women "transitioning" into adulthood. Through the medium of storytelling the Transitions Radio project will help young listeners through a generally turbulent time in life, exceptionally turbulent considering the current economy. We accomplish this by inviting interesting guests to share their stories with us through live interviews. We are joined every week by a diverse group of guests. These including entertaining musicians, informed political guests, and even guests who discuss such hard hitting topics as youth depression and attempted suicide. The main goal of the Transitions, no matter how hard hitting the topic, is to inform our audience and provide a broadcast medium that allows their voices to be heard. In fact it has been a great pleasure to hear many insightful tips, hints and revelations from young guests, much like myself, who bring a diversity of experiences to the show. It is also important to note the utilization of technology, in this case the podcast, is another way in which we hope the project will reach a wide audience. Similar podcast projects are currently underway to empower underprivileged, struggling students in inner city Philadelphia schools. The belief behind these programs, much the same as ours, is to build a communicative bridge and enhance understanding. The Transitions Radio project is dedicated to being a successful radio program that is able to entertain and inform our audience. Committed to providing positive connections, the Transitions Radio project looks forward to bringing people together and sharing their common stories, to increase understanding and spread knowledge of the inherit value we can gain from listening to each other.

Plan of Action

As a group we initially met to discuss the main mission and purpose of Transitions Radio, and its parent organization, Jump Start This Productions. From there we created a budget and a time frame in which to purchase equipment, book a venue, confirm guests and develop content for our first live broadcast on May 27, 2010. We now meet twice a week for a development meeting on Tuesdays and again to record our live events at the venue we book on Thursdays. Jump Start This Productions is headed by our Executive Producer, Janene Gibbons, and our Associate Producer Noelle Westfall. The requesting and confirming of venues in which to do our live shows are handled by our booking managers Beth Minkus and Melissa Leon. The Co-Hosts, Jon Mimm and Cally McCurdy, are responsible for interviewing the main guest of the show and providing comment for the contributor segments. Our contributors are Dan Schmidt, Veronica Dudo, Melissa Leon and Janene Gibbons. Derek Transue, our Technical Engineer, is responsible for the equipment and recording the show. Our final member, Danielle Alio, is the videographer/photographer and provides that ever important multimedia touch to the Transitions Radio project. Looking toward the future we are currently in the process of hiring a Sponsor Relations Coordinator to reach out to potential advertisers. We will also continue recording a live show each week throughout the summer. The eventual plan is to either become syndicated through a major radio station or remain independent and raise money through advertising revenue and generous grants through great organization such as BIC 4 Good and dosomething.org We hope to continue this project that has brought much inspiration to our lives as well to the lives of others.

Project Updates

Great news for Jumpstart This Production's Transitions Radio...free swag courtesy of Kelty International to give out at our shows, offers for some PR coverage in Philadelphia, and our very own Cally McCurdy is the keynote speaker at the Library Management Institute conference in Philly on October 8th to talk about... Transitions in their "Next Step: Help Wanted" segment focused on outreach to students after graduation...check it out at http://www.kiesermanconsulting.com/library_management_institute

Check out the pictures from our fourth show at Slainte in center-city Philadelphia. We had an all star show with interviews with social and politically conscious rappers Lord Byron and Razzia, health tips via Sean from Row Zone, Marines heading from war back into College classrooms, a laugh filled interview with Philadelphia's own sketch comedy group "The Wait Staff" and an exclusive interview with comedian Dane Cook!

The BIC 4 GOOD Grant application has been submitted! We also received some great news from DoSomething.org...tomorrow, June 19th, 2010 we will be featured as The Project of the Day on the homepage! We are very excited about this opportunity to be showcased on the site. Please feel free to comment and provide some feedback about the project and visit transitionsradio.com to listen to our podcasts, see video of our events and learn more about the cast/crew of Transitions Radio. We are continually astounded at the progress we are making with this project and hope it will provide inspiration for others to share their stories and undertake similar initiatives!

Working hard on the BIC4GOOD grant application. It is a fun process discovering how to apply for a grant and how much it makes you learn about different facets of your own project! I'll update again once the application is complete and let everyone know about the progress of the Transitions Radio project! Now stop reading this, get out, and DO SOMETHING!!!
