The Problem

For True Beauties, I work with fifth and sixth grade girls at my school to teach them about topics such as self-esteem, modesty, confidence, peer pressure, and much more! I know what kind of pressure there is out in the world to look a certain way and to act a certain way. The problem with that concept is that we are not all the same. Therefore, girls think that there is something wrong with them when they do not fit into this cookie-cutter image of beauty. Beauty, however, is not about the shine of your hair, the symmetry of your face, or the style of your clothes. It is about something deeper, below the surface, and the essence of who you are. You can see real beauty in compassion, and that little light that shines from within makes all the difference. My True Beauties girls are a part of this project to learn just that and to apply it to their lives not just now but for years to come.

Plan of Action

The year started with a meeting to tell the parents and the girls about True Beauties. While lessons were prepared and the basics of the program were worked out, the girls who were interested signed up. There was a photo shoot for the girls to have fun, act goofy, and do something they had might have felt uncomfortable about doing before. We had a bake sale before Christmas and through that and donations, we raised $350. There was a Christmas party where the girls got to play games, eat food, and have a good time. Meetings started in January, and there have been lessons about modesty, peer pressure, relationships, and more. The meetings will end in May, and we will have a car wash during the summer where I will also work on making True Beauties better. There was a slumber party for the girls who completed the project. There will be a fashion show in May where the girls get to wear scarves, hats, purses, and other accessories while they strut their stuff and get to have fun. It will be like a big game of dress up. Next year, we are going to make True Beauties a nonprofit organization, open it up to the community for other schools to do, and help even more girls in big and better ways. We will design a website, make podcasts, make a video about our project, and more! The girls love the program and come every Tuesday with enthusiam. I can see a change in them already, and they love having older girls interested in their lives. We are changing the world one girl at a time!
