Tumai For Tomorrow Youth Philanthropy Project
the problem:
Students from Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga have united in search of a common goal: to raise community awareness for a life-threatening parasitic disease known as Malaria. Malaria kills over 3,000 African children each day, yet this disease, if identified and treated early enough, can be cured.
In partnership with the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation, our goal is to raise $10,000 for malaria research by hosting a charity dinner gala on November 13th 2009. The gala is entitled Tumai For Tomorrow, tumai, which means “hope” in Swahili, is the gift that we dream of giving to the people of Africa. Funds raised from Tumai for Tomorrow will support translational, lifesaving research at the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health.
vital stats:
people impacted:
100,000people involved:
25why it's important:
Throughout this experience we have learned so much about this life-threatening disease. 90% of deaths in Africa are children under the age of five but we CAN reduce these numbers.
the plan of action:
Organizing a charity dinner gala to raise funds for malaria research and treatment in Tanzania and creating a malaria documentary to raise community awareness and educate others about the devastating effects of this disease but inform them that if we work together malaria can be eradicated.
