The Problem

The situation occurring in Darfur is unimaginable. People are being tortured, driven out of their homes, and killed by their government. The project that I am a part of believes that this needs to be stopped. Most people do not even know that a genocide is currently occurring. We even received the question "Who's Darfur?" Our goal is to raise awareness and make this genocide end as soon as possible to save as many lives as possible.

Plan of Action

-We organized "Tunes Against Turmoil" last year and are organizing "Tunes against Turmoil 2" currently. This involves fundraising, contacting bands and sponsors, reserving a location, getting a permit, hiring police and emergency personnel, renting "port-a-potties," making contracts, finding a professional sound system, contacting public speakers, advertising, obtaining food and beverage for the event, making tee-shirts and wristbands, putting in many, many hours, and much more. -I have spoken at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey with the two other executives and my advisor, Steve Marcus to raise awareness to college students. -We are organizing a "coffee house" scheduled for March 13, 2009. to raise money for our concert event. There will be a bake sale, coffee, poetry reading, live music, comedy, and a raffle. -We are holding a "Dance For Darfur" Dance off competition on February 27, 2009 as another fundraiser. -We (two years ago) obtained actual drawings that were drawn by the children of Darfur. They consisted of blood, fire, war, killing, and pain. We then had our local elementary students draw pictures of their daily lives. These pictures consisted of hearts and rainbows and smiles. These pictures were displayed in our school. -Three years ago, we held a "Die In" in which students lay on the floor in protest to bring attention to the matter and to symbolize the people that are dying. This was also a huge success. -We have also had fundraisers at Friendly's Restaurant in Northfield, NJ and at Franks Theaters (Towne 16 Movie Theatre) -And this is not the end of our hard work. We are still coming up with ideas for the future.
