The Problem
We want to help Oklahoma's teens make healthier prom/graduation season choices by encouraging them not to drink & drive, to abstain from risky sexual behavior, and to wear seat belts when driving or riding.
Underage drinking in Oklahoma leads to substantial harm due to traffic crashes, violent crime, property crime, unintentional injury, and risky sex. During 2007, an estimated 29 traffic fatalities and 1,200 nonfatal traffic injuries involved an underage drinking driver. In 2006, an estimated 28 homicides; 14,800 nonfatal violent crimes such as rape, robbery and assault; and 24,700 property crimes including burglary, larceny, and car theft involved an underage drinking perpetrator. In 2006, an estimated 7 alcohol involved fatal burns, drownings, and suicides involved underage drinking. In 2006, an estimated 2,500 teen pregnancies and 11,600 risky sexual acts by teens involved alcohol.
Plan of Action
This is an ongoing project and I am the Fundraising Chairperson. We are in the planning stages for the 2011 event. In the beginning stages, community resources and organizations are identified and contacted. A committee is formed and a venue located and secured. Funds are raised for the project and the planning committee meets regularly to plan the details of the event. Public relations activities include sending out press releases to media outlets, doing television interviews, distributing flyers, going to the local high schools to do word of mouth advertising.
Since 2008 the impact of this project has been phenomenal with over 200 young people receiving prom attire and positive messages from local community based prevention organizations such as the YWCA, A Chance to Change Foundation, MADD of Central Oklahoma and many others!
