UCLA Black Pre-Law Association

the problem:

We address the issue of low number of minorities in the legal field. This includes, not only in legal professions, but applying to college, especially law school, the lack of awareness about educational resources needed to further the professions of young African-Americans.

why it's important:

I am from South Central Los Angeles, one of the many underrepresented minority communities in America. I am an undergraduate at UCLA and is looking towards a Bachelor's agree in African-American studies and Political Science. I plan on attending law school after I graduate and becoming an attorney of civil rights law. I want to create that awareness of the importance of education and help, in any way possible, students who want to attend law school and make a living in the legal field.

the plan of action:

This is BPLA's goal:
The organization is primarily concerned with getting more underrepresented minorities in the legal field. We do this by providing a social and academic network for students of color at UCLA who wish to attend law school. We have a mentorship program which pairs upper classmen with lower classmen. We conduct workshops for UCLA students on how to succeed academically, perform well on the LSAT, and utilize the wealth of resources available to undergraduate students who wish to attend law school. We also have guest speakers lecture on issues concerning the interrelatedness of race and law, how students can use a law degree to help their communities, and the law school admissions process. We raise money to send students to external legal and law school related activities. In addition, we promote community service by recruiting members of our organization for other campus groups which are centrally concerned with various community services (i.e. tutoring and mentoring high school students in disadvantaged neighborhoods). Ultimately, we seek to assist the Black community by helping black students enter law school and receive the tools they need to bring about significant social progress.

how you can get involved:

Get involved. Promote higher education, encourage students to dream and set goals, and allow students to empower themselves by making plan of actions.
