The Problem
Our program, the Uganda Children's Educational Project, was started in 2005 by Tibursious Ssendawula. The project seeks to raise money to aid Ugandan children attending primary and secondary school who show the desire to learn and work hard at their studies, but who do not have sufficient funds to proceed. We continue this program, with the help of many wonderful folks, because children in Uganda must pay for their school books and uniforms--a cost of approximately $30 per semester for primary school students and $90 for students in secondary school--and this is sometimes quite difficult for families with several children to care for. In addition, the education of female children is often neglected in favor of male children in families that cannot afford to send all children to school.
Tibursious came up with the idea five years ago while attending high school in the U.S. and observing how much money went into vending machines at his school. He realized that small increments of money can go a long way, and began fund raising.
Plan of Action
Our plan of action is to fund raise approximately $3,000 for building materials for two brick houses. The materials will be purchased locally in Uganda. Volunteers adept at building houses will construct the houses over the course of approximately two weeks, with the younger children helping according to ability.
