The Problem

The Unity Bead Challenge is a project with three aims: 1) To assist impoverished fair trade beadmakers from Africa and promote their handmade, eco-friendly beads, 2) To inspire and challenge local adults and youth as they create unique pieces of jewelry from ethically sourced and created ecofriendly/ fair trade beads, and 3) To raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay's Youth For Unity Program, which helps area kids embrace diversity and engage in multicultural projects that help unify our world.

Plan of Action

Our plan is to continue to get the word out about the Unity Bead Challenge, to build local and eventually national momentum for this fair trade initiative which provides an eco-friendly way to support African bead makers while promoting diversity appreciation. The 2009 Unity Bead Challenge was a great success in its inceptional year, and through word-of-mouth and social networking online, it is my goal to dramatically increase participation in the 2010 Unity Bead Challenge.

Project Updates

We continued our Unity Bead Challenge auction at the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay's Steak & Burger event on October 13, 2009, to raise another $700 for our project! We are now halfway to reaching our goal of raising enough funding to adopt an African village in need.
