Unwritten Letters Project

the problem:

The problem the Unwritten Letters Project is trying to solve is silence. People have silenced themselves and have been silenced for various reasons, and now is their chance to finally come out with it all and find their voices! People are submitting letters about life, death, sexuality, love, pain and much, much more. It's amazing how many lives can be changed when you give them a chance to get their voices heard across the world. The community I am reaching spreads throughout the world. People, young and old are writing letters they never thought they would be able to form into words and are being helped to finally put issues to rest or put issues out there that need to be discussed. People have been fascinated at the amount of empathy they feel for other people's letters and how many people share the same experiences. Writing a letter and seeing it on a website views by thousands is a powerful experience.

why it's important:

The Unwritten Letters Project spawned from a Family Communication class at my University. The class itself was like a family and an assignment reminded me of how many times I would write letters or notes to people in my diaries while growing up. I wondered if anyone else used this creative outlet to express emotions, and sure enough, the world responded. This project is important to me because I am affecting people's lives for the better. They send me comments and testimonials trying to express in words how this website has empowered them, let them release years of pent-up emotions and let them move on with their lives as happier people. This project is the result of so much hard work and dedication to making sure people have a way to say what they need to say, no matter what they want to say, no censorship, no judgement, just your voice, your words, your time. The world is waiting.

the plan of action:

A book project is in the works for the Unwritten Letters Project. The book is due out in mid-November through LeClere Books Publishing Company (Leclerebooks.com). The book will consist of approximnately 100 letters including testimonials from users of the site. The University I attend will be hosting a book sigining and I am the first student author to be featured in the University Bookstore. St. Louis Magazine has interviewed me and their article will be featured in the January issue, due out at the end of December.

Next, I will be starting a supplemetary project for the second book in the series titled "Letters to Our Fallen Heroes" (letters2ourfallenheroes.com). I hope to have that book out this time next year. In the meantime, both sites will be up and running.

We are also currently working on the "You Have A Voice" Inspirational Book Tour through St. Louis area High Schools including my story of being bullied through high school and overcoming hardships, continuing education and finding your way to express your voice and be heard by the time you're 21.

It's all very exciting.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by submitting letters to the website, offering feedback on the aesthetics to the site and helping me navigate the literary and publishing world. How can I reach more people and has the site been helpful to YOU?
