Project Updates

06/06/2009

Well, this will be my last update. I've finished my project but really, it's just begun. Next year is going to be great! The parent teacher organization is enthusiastic about helping to continue the project. They are holding my leftover grant money until next year when we are going use it for a green club who picks up the recyclables, maybe have a guest speaker, and possibly a field trip for the green club! I really want to thank DoSomething who gave me funding and inspiration and hope. Also my mom and dad encouraged me a lot. Thank you! Last week I got my Girl Scout Silver Award. It's a really special award for a big project like this. I'm happy.

So the contest didn't go as well as I hoped but things are looking up. The kids did a great job reducing trash, but they didn't behave while I gave out prizes. Each lunch period reduced at least 50% of trash! The contest will continue the next 3 weeks. I guess the classroom recycling program won't start quite yet but maybe next year it will. I hope DoSomething will let me keep the money over the summer. I'm running out of time for this school year! If they don't I would understand.

Good news! My project is finally coming through! I went to a lot of meetings that seemed like they weren't really helping but I guess it was worth it in the end. Last week the students made posters about reducing lunch waste. The contest is this week! The students are doing a great job reducing trash and already one lunch period halved their amount of waste. Happy Earth Day!
