the problem:

The City of Detroit has been hit economically hard. There is not a single chain of grocery stores..as Kroger, Mejier & Farmer Jacks have moved out of the city.

There are tons of vacant lots filled with fresh soil where homes or other establishments once existed. Our goal is to turn these vacant lots into farm plots and beautiful gardens with wind turbines. The produce grown in the gardens will be sold in the Eastern Market and to local restaurants. Once our project goes full scale we hope that we can improve Detroit Public School Lunches by becoming a supplier of the vegetables and fruits served in lunches.

why it's important:

This is important to me because I am a Detroit Resident & Agriculture Student at Michigan State. I believe the only way for the city of Detroit to preserve what is left for future organizations is to start producing something no human can live with out. By transitioning to a more agricultural based city, Detroit will position itself for economic recovery and be an active player in the largest industry in the world.

Also by becoming agricultural based, the residents will no longer have to depend on the local liquor store to supply their groceries.

I am a product of the Detroit Public School system. Our lunches had low nutritional value, as ketchup which contains high fructose corn syrup was considered a vegetable serving. Without proper breakfast & lunch kids in school can not get better grades or focus. Youth are apt to eat more healthy if they understand the correlation of their health & the environment.

This is important to me because if someone doesn't restore the beautiful land, and provide a sustainable food source future generations will suffer.

the plan of action:

1. My plan of action is to visit all Detroit Public Schools to speak about the importance of eating healthy and taking care of the environment.

2. Engage/Hype the students with music and recruit them for the coolest largest restoration project ever put on in the city of Detroit!

3. Spring of 2010 our team will be launching the school tour at my former high school "Edwin Denby Prep"

4.Starting April 1st-during the weekend we will gather at the sites for hands on training/overview of what we would like to grow and program expectations.

5. We will have steet-teams canvassing in outlining suburbs to raise funds to cover equipment costs, debris removal and fun events.

how you can get involved:

Yes others can help, we are hoping to partner with other other organizations with the same mission! We are hoping to gain the support of all school districts to push for better lunches and more agriculture education.
