The Problem

The problem with traditional flare use is that a box of 36 flares is approximately as much as or greater to $100.00 per box which doesnt even at times include shipping cost. Each flare when lit lasts approximately twenty minutes to a half hour meaning that given the cost it costs approximately $3.00 per flare. Once lit a traditional flare cannot be reused. Say you have a vehicle flipped over in the middle of the road at night time and you need to block the road on both sides of the vehicle. Using 3 flares on both sides of the road, 6 flares, $18.00 per half hour, after 1 hour will have used 12 flares spending $36.00, after 2 hours, 24 flares spending $72.00. Now imagine how many times a fire company or police agency may have to use flares in a single year. Flare usage can end up costing organizations thousands of dollars every year. Not only are traditional flares costly, they are harmful to the environment and to those who use them. Traditional flares can start fires if left unattended on the roadway because wind can blow them off the roadway. Traditional flares give off harmful vapors that should not be breathed in, can burn those who use them, leave a chemical residue on the roadway that often last for several days and can damage roadway markings as well as the road itself. Often flares are too hot after burning out, being left as trash on the side of the roadway by their user. Led flares can be placed next to flammable liquids, hazardous materials, can be driven over, and even float in water.

Why It's Important

I have been volunteering my time for years as a firefighter and fire policeman. I witness first hand the importance for such a product such as an LED flare. I also work as as an Emergency Medical Technican and realize the great importance for traffic control and warning devices.

The Plan Of Action

I plan on using any funds raised to promote the led flare by sharing it with other individuals and educating them on the pros of using the led flare over the traditional flare. With donations I will donate led flares to support led flare awareness and its use.

How Can Others Get Involved?

Volunteer your time to educate your local fire company, police service, and any organization you know that uses flares on the LED flare and refer them to this website.

Project Updates

02/19/10
Update: With the help of Dosomething.org and a Disaster Grant Award, we were able to purchase more LED flares. We are currently introducing them to neighboring communities. Our State Police have begun to take notice of the led flares and have enquired about them. Project is continuing to be successful through education and introduction of the LED flares into surrounding communities. Project is going to attempt to raise even more funds through the PEPSI refresh project later this year.

Wow, these LED flares seem like an important and easy switch that we can make. If you need additional funds to help purchase the flares, you should try applying for a Do Something grant.

Learn more about the grants here:

Keep up the good work!

This idea seems to hit close to home for you, considering your work. It looks like you have the funds necessary to make this project play out but if you need anything else you should really think about applying for a grant! good luck!

EVI Management Group began distributing TigerFlare LED Emergency Road Flares in 2009.

We have found that Police and Fire Departments around the world are enthusiastically switching from traditional perchlorate flares to the TigerFlare and other similar devices.

If EVI and TigerFlare can participate in your efforts to promote this new technology, please let us know how we can help.
