The Problem

Uyisenga N'Manzi works with children and young adults who have become orphans and head of their households as a result of the Rwandan genocide and of HIV/AIDS. The majority of the beneficiaries of Uyisenga are also survivors of the Rwandan genocide and suffer from the consequences of witnessing and being victims of many atrocities. For these reasons, Uyisenga offers a comprehensive package to all of its beneficiaries. They receive mental health care but are also helped to achieve economic sustainability through the development of income generating activities. Uyisenga also provides funds for education and materials that are needed for the beneficiaries to attend school such as transportation fees or blankets, soaps and notebooks for the many who attend boarding school. In collaboration with Survivor's Fund (SURF), Uyisenga has also been able to build homes for some of its beneficaries to allow them to reconstruct the families that were previously scattered accross orphanages and foster homes. Moreover, Uyisenga also advocates for the rights of its beneficaries as well as children head of households accross Rwanda. Through providing assistance for those who testify at the Gacaca courts as well as training some of their beneficiaries as paralegal, Uyisenga ensures that the rights of orphans are represented and respected.
