The Problem
We’ve developed a Recycling Program but that’s not all it is.
We make the youth of our community aware of Global Warming’s effects, we show them why’s they can help reduce the CO2 they emit, we give them a place to recycle, we encourage them to recycle not only on campus but in their homes, and we hope they will carry any information or habits we’ve show them as they grow up so the next time they throw away a plastic bottle they think twice.
It all began with a song then Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" movie. Little by little my class realized something needed to be done. It became our classes Service Learning project. We need some kind of organization and little by little I went from being our projects organizer to our projects leader to finally the programs president. Sadly once my class mates received there credit and abandoned the class, I not only became the leader of the project but I became the project. Everyone lost interest in the idea of recycling in our school. I went to my friends to ask them for help and support and got it. Together the three of us fully developed the program. We called representatives from the Los Angles Sanitation Department and Organization of Health and Sanitation assuring that they would provide bins for the recyclables and deliver them to our school on the designated days. We discovered why past recycling programs failed and made sure those errors whould not be repeted in our own program. We set up proposals for the principal and presented them to her during summer school. We organized a verbal and written description of the program and presented it to the teachers the day before the 2007-2008 school year began. We printed and displayed flyers for our program around the school. We set up assemblies for the entire student body with in a week’s time. We distributed the containers were the recyclables would be collected in to each classroom, office and around the campus. We go around the school daily during our schools optional 4th period picking up all the recyclables from the classrooms, offices, and bins located around the school campus. We are responsible placing the blue recycling bins, that Los Angles Sanitation Department provided for us, on the street curb every Monday morning before school so that the city can pick up the recyclables. We take the plastic, aluminum, and glass to a near by recycling plant and use the funds we receive from them to buy gloves, bags, hand sanitizer, etc. for the program. We are recruiting the younger students from our school to follow in our foot steps and continue the program long after we graduate high school in 2009.
