Violins for Greater Success

the problem:

My county is a very rural county with very limited fine arts and culture. The town is just a square of businesses. We have one high school. Some of the children and people that live here never make it far outside our county lines. I have been playing violin for 7 years and love the instrument. I would like to introduce 4th graders in my county to playing the violin in hopes that this might spark an interest in building a fine arts program in our schools. Our superintendent and the principal of the school I intend to teach at greatly support the idea.

why it's important:

Music is an important form of personal expression and has always been a part of the human experience. In addition to music providing a valuable vehicle for self- expression, music education is also very academic. Studies have found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Elementary school children who were given music lessons on a particular instrument scored much higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no instruction. Many children in Monroe County don't get the opportunity to play an instrument because of limited funds to purchase them and then pay for lessons. Learning to play the violin early in life can lead to future successes and enrich people’s lives in many ways. I have played the violin for 7 years. I am currently 1st chair violin with the Mercer/Macon Symphony Orchestra. Learning to play the violin has been a wonderful educational opportunity for me, and I believe in sharing this gift with my community by offering elementary school children in Monroe County this artistic opportunity.

the plan of action:

My proposal, Violins for Greater Success, provides violin instruction to 10 fourth grade students at K. B. Sutton Elementary School as an after school enrichment activity for the 2009-2010 school year. Instruction will consist of 25 weekly sessions throughout the year, culminating in a student performance. This is meant to be a community service project on my part with no cost whatsoever to the student. The students will keep the violins at the end of the year in hopes that they will particpate in lessons when they are in 5th grade. I am currently seeking funding in the amount of $1385.00 to purchase violins ($133.00 each) and music books ($5.50 each) to make this idea become a reality.

how you can get involved:

I am asking your organization to please consider funding this project to motivate a young child's life in the arts by giving him an opportunity to learn to play the violin. A contribution in any amount would be greatly appreciated. I cannot tell you how important and meaningful this project will be to our community and students.
