The Problem

Youth members of Jer's Vision: Canada's Youth Diversity Initiative have started a new project called: VISION News.  VISION News celebrates diverse events in the National Capital Region that often go unheard of. One of a kind, this news show allows youth to talk about the issues of diversity and discrimination in a new way, that gives the the opportunity to learn about issues, engage in new communities and celebrate all persons.

Plan of Action

We would like to request a grant from Do Something (Game Stop) that would allow us to purchase a new camera, microphone and cables. This new camera would be a real video camera, allowing us to film evening news, news in noisy/windy locations and news more frequently because the program would have a camera, as opposed to borrowing one. Since the project started over 10 new clips have been made, however because of quality, only 6 have been able to been used. Nevertheless, with more volunteers joining the project weekly, the frequency of shows has increaced to 1 every 2 weeks, with some weeks being planned to have over 5 new shows per week.Your support would change our world!Currently the program has over 600 subscribers online, with over twice that who watch it.See the current show at: http://www.jersvision.org/english/ottawa/awareness_visionnews.php

Project Updates

7/3/08-Upon getting the GameStop Grant we were able to get additional funds to buy our new camera. This also helped us get new volunteers. We now produce 1-4 news shows a month and have almost 1000 people watching each show. We have changed our community by giving dozens of youth a voice in journalism, an adult dominated field. We have been able to get these youth involved in the community and show the thousands of youth watching at home that there is so much more out there and so many ways to get involved.
