The Problem

There are many talented youth and teens in my community of Kitsap County. I feel as if these kids are struggling to find the right ways to express themselves through dance. Many people are uneducated of what hip hop dance is becoming, and it is truly revolutionizing dance as an art form. Hip hop is now merging with other styles such as contemporary, jazz, and even musical theater. There are a scarce amount of opportunities in our county, and many kids do not have the money or travel to take classes at well-known studios in the Greater Seattle area. Many studios in my community do not take hip hop seriously, and I want to be able to incorporate hip hop dance in my community. I hope to increase my community's awareness for other forms of performing arts. I see a lot of potential in the dancers that have attended our benefit workshops, and I believe in bringing people's talent to their full potential.

Plan of Action

My organization just recently completed our "Dance for a Cause" benefit workshops to raise money for choreographers to instruct at our workshops and provide low-income youth with scholarships to attend these workshops. We have raised about $300 at this point, and need to raise more money in order to run a full summer intensive. We hope to raise $1000 dollars total by July. We will also send out applications for low-income youth for a full scholarship to our summer workshop. We also plan on holding auditions for a performing group, and our long term goal is to compete in the World of Dance-Seattle competition, along with other local community events.
