The Problem
Kasoa, one of the fastest growing areas in Ghana, is forty-five minutes outside of Accra, the capital. As Accra's urban sprawl spills into Kasoa government resources are quickly depleted. Most importantly the Kasoa Health Center. Given the limited resources it is difficult for the hardworking staff to provide basic health care for everyone in the area.
Plan of Action
I am a student of Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz. This has taught me how to address social issues in an entrepreneurial way. Knowing I was coming to Ghana to study abroad I also took classes on mobile technologies for social advocacy so that I could take advantage of the growing network of mobile phone users in Ghana.
So now I plan to use Medic Mobile, a free open source medical records system that has the ability to collect data from remote health care workers and send reminders to patients.
This allows for the Kasoa Health Center to treat patients all over the Awutu Senya District far more efficiently. Most importantly it allows for the District to track patients and their medical records like never before. This allows for preventative diagnostics that in the long run saves lives by preventing medical emergencies and ultimately saves the time of hospital staff so more patients can be seen.
