The Problem

Milwaukee is one of the leading cities in the US in new HIV cases. The largest group of those are women of color between the ages of 13-30. We also have a growing rate of other STD/STIs. Our city's nonprofits who help and educate our youth are underrepresented due to lack of funding for advertising and our poverty rate is twice that of the national average for large cities.

Plan of Action

Well, the organization that I created mentors and tutors young women in the areas of financial planning, academic studies, CPR/First Aid and sexual health. The project that the grant will go toward is a project called Voice Magazine: The Voice of the Urban Woman. Through our mentoring, we found that our clients needed some information in 4 major areas: Healthy social interactions, physical health, healthy finance and more academic and education information. the magazine is a meeting place for our readers and professionals in the different areas. It also has entertaining and artistic elements which I believe make it interesting and eye catching.
