The Problem

Healthcare is a central issue in all countries; it is our mission to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare in developing nations such as the Dominican Republic. Through this outreach we hope to bring medical care to rural areas in the Dominican Republic and to reach out to as many people as possible. We strive to provide the best medical care while researching and educating people about how best to take care of their health. A great majority of rural Dominican populations are denied adequate healthcare due to the scarcity of health institutions and trained professionals; the situation is exacerbated by the lack of knowledge of the locals on the issues of health and disease. We need your help! This summer we will alleviate these healthcare concerns in our outreach to the Dominican Republic in various clinics, education days, and health-focused surveys.

Plan of Action

We are gathering volunteers from the Vanderbilt University Community to go on the medical service trip in May. We will try and collect as much medical supplies (blood pressure pumps, blood glucose monitors, etc) and medicines prior to the trip and raise funds to buy the rest of the medicines in country. On our trip we will set up mobile clinics in schools and churches in the communities of Constanza and Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. Our group of volunteers and medical staff will admit and treat patients in the community. We will also travel to local schools to teach students about a public health topic of our choosing, such as dental hygiene. We will create the lesson plan in spanish for the kids and collect any items we need for our project. So, for dental hygiene we would collect toothbrushes.
