After starting our club in fall of 2009, we did fundraisers and educational opportunities around the school.
This March, we organized a community volunteer day at our local library. Attendees had the opportunity to receive a free pass to Disney World through Disney's Give a Day Get a Disney Day Program.
We advertised our event in the local paper. We scheduled the session at the Public Library.
We made jewelry starts, organized color scheme "trays", corresponded with prospective volunteers, helped them register through Disney, solicited donations, and set up the room.
On that day, volunteer from two states flocked into the Library to make jewelry. They used "BeadforLife" (one of our partner organizations) beads which are handmade by Ugandan women. They collect scraps of paper to roll into beads to sell in order to provide for their families. "Filler beads" which are often donated or purchased using grant money accent the Ugandan beads.
After it all, we have to "finish" the pieces by attaching clasps.
At the end of the day, volunteers had made 394 braclets to sell for $5 and 44 necklaces to sell for $10. We received $405 in donations and jewelry sales which we did not anticipate.
We raised enough funds to purchase 281 bednets and save 843 lives.
