The Problem
LaCarpio is a Nicaraguan refugee camp in Costa Rica. The people there live in extreme poverty. Often they go hungry and live in shanties with cardboard or metal walls and dirt floors. A family of 6 may share one egg for the week. The girls there are sexually abused from a very young age by their friends, their fathers, their brothers. Drug and alcohol abuse is rampant.
Plan of Action
Based on the adage "walk a mile in their shoes," this walk-a-thon will encourage participants (sponsored to walk laps on our track) to help us walk a distance equal to the distance from our hometown to LaCarpio. Along the way we will promote social activism as well as rewarding healthy habits. Donations will go to the hot lunch program.
