The Problem
The number one focus of my project is to decrease wasteful habits. For example, we try to promote reusing plastic or paper lunch bags, using double sided paper for print outs, and carpooling to school. It is incredible how much paper is wasted in a school because of inapt teachers or students. During lunch, whole apples and packed lunches are thrown away without any defect.
Our target is school kids because the habits they form now will carry with them for the rest of their lives and they can further encourage others to be less wasteful. After completing certain qualifications at the high school we hope to move on to the middle school where students may be more impressionable.
Plan of Action
The project Waste Less has worked very closely with other school clubs such as Green School and National Honor Society. By working with other clubs our goals are more likely to be accomplished and more people are able to get involved.
To date, we have made a measurable impact on our school. A significant amount of people participated in Walk and Bike to School day and the Green School Club continues to gain members as knowledge of its existence spreads. The project is not completed therefore the impact has not been finalized. We hope that awareness about wastefulness will spread and students will gain important skills and habits to decrease their carbon footprint on the environment.
