The Problem
The newly formed nation of Southern Sudan has inadequate access to clean water and education, as well as limited understanding and appreciation of democratic ideals. After 21 years of civil war, the nation is devastated with limited infrastructure. While this nation recently declared its independence from Northern Sudan, the effects of the conflict still linger. The local population of more than 7.5 million remains in a daily struggle for survival. By providing a comprehensive solution that includes clean water, civic education and democratic ideals, we strive to assist Southern Sudan in building a nation that will serve as the model for long-term success.
• 1 in 6 people in Southern Sudan lack access to clean water.
• Lack of access to clean water claims the lives of 3,900 children in Southern Sudan daily.
• With 1,700 deaths per 100,000 live births, Southern Sudan’s mortality rate ranks as the 5th highest in the world
• A family of 7 spends an average of 5 hours day collecting, transporting and purifying water
Plan of Action
Aqua-Africa’s vision is rooted in human potential. We believe the core of this potential lies in three areas: water, civic education and democratic ideology. By providing the means for individuals and communities to access water, education and values of democracy, Aqua-Africa believes we can change a desperate situation into an inspirational reality.
Our Objectives:
• Well Construction: Drill one water well that will provide 1,000 people with clean drinking water.
• Water Committee: Divide communities of 10,000 residents into
service areas called camps. Each camp of 333 residents will elect 2 representatives to construct, implement and enforce water utility
policy.
• Three-Part Civic Education:
1. Conduct a study to identify areas of deficiency and need.
2. Identify an appropriate curriculum that addresses these
deficiencies to be approved by water committee.
3. Aqua-Africa certified teachers will conduct training to designated local leaders to educate residents.
• Health and Sanitation: Conduct an impact study to identify
high- risk contamination areas and provide risk education.
• Economic Impact: In a community of 1,000 residents, save 7,142 man hours.
• Environmental Impact: Provide sufficient quantity of clean drinking water to reduce the amount of wood burned to purify water.
• Well Maintenance: Hire and train a full-time maintenance person in the service area. The maintenance person will conduct a quarterly performance test on the water well and perform necessary maintenance.
