The Problem
WaterWalla is dedicated to providing access to clean water to people living in urban slums. At present, 1.1 billion people lack daily access to clean drinking water and 800 million people are residents of slums. There are few organizations committed to bringing clean water technologies to residents of such urban slums in affordable and sustainable ways.
Plan of Action
Started in April 2010 by five Brown & Rhode Island School of Design Students, it was originally project designed to leverage our collective knowledge pools in order to produce a synergistic solution that makes a difference in the world. We collectively have studied economics, entrepreneurship, business, neuroscience, industrial design, graphic design, community health, and numerous other fields. WaterWalla came about as a culmination of various skill sets applied to one of the most challenging problems in the world: improving access to clean water.
We began by performing extensive market research using any available data regarding access to clean water, water disinfection/purification technologies, and anecdotal evidence from people who have done work. In doing so, we have raised a great deal of awareness in the slum we are initially starting. We are now sourcing clean water technologies which would best fit the needs of slum residents and creating sustainable local micro-enterprises around them using local entrepreneurial talent. Through a profit incentive for our "WaterWalla's" and innovative education/marketing for consumers, our goal is to create these clean water product businesses in slums across the world.
