WE PREPARE
the problem:
The problem I am addressing is lack of preparation and education in the community for emergency preparedness. This event will be held at The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale which helps a diverse population which would be more vulnerable in an emergency or a disaster. The families which attend this event will be prepared with education and equipment for future disasters and emergencies.

42why it's important:
It is important to me because I have been through a disaster that our family was not prepared for and I would like others to be prepared and not have to go through the same thing I had to. In my own disaster, people that our family knew came and helped us with our disaster. I am hoping to help families before the disaster hits so they can be ready for it.
the plan of action:
I have invited people to present at nine booths at The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale on May 16, 2009. The presenters are professionals in the fields invited to present covering topics of tornado preparedness, earthquake safety, fire preventions and evacuation, water storage and purification, ham radios and communication, pet safety, first aid, 72 hour kits and Map Your Neighborhood. I have asked a State representative to donate smoke detectors for this event and Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale has secured a mini grant from The Jackson County Health Department which will be used for personal safety kits and other supplies. During the event there will be a scavenger hunt which people will have to collect the answer for a worksheet from the presenters and the first 40 families to complete this scavenger hunt will receive a personal safety kit.
The Carbondale Police Department and Boys and Girls Club will be inviting families to the event through the local media. I will be signing people up wherever I am at and will be handing out flyers at Wal-Mart the two Saturdays before the event.
The impact so far is that people are talking about being under prepared and their desire to be prepared for disaster has increased. We will have pre and post surveys for them to fill out so we can measure what they have learned about preparedness. The pre and post surveys will be the same and the answers will be given by the presenters during the event and collected on the scavenger hunt worksheets.
how you can get involved:
There are people in the community that will need to help with table and chair set-up, run boothes, registration tables, distribute water, direct people around the entire event, helping distribute and collect surveys. I have 42 people involved to be staffing the entire event at this point but am looking for more help with children's activities and helping at boothes. We are hoping for at least 60 to 70 families to be trained at this event.
