The Problem

Not long ago, Chaska community consisted of nearly all Caucasian ethnicity. Recently, however, our community has been growing very rapidly. As a result, more diverse ethnicity have been shown in our school. With our community project, we will help unify our school to diminish unnecessary ethnic barriers that our school is now facing -- especially with Latino and Hmong populations growing. Such barriers are: little interaction among ethnic groups, a lack of involvement in school activities, and occasional brawls among different groups. Through the community project, we want to give the students an opportunity of being exposed to different cultural backgrounds, and understanding each other better, and celebrating our differences. This project is intended to overcome the negative factors of the difference by encouraging students to serve our community through volunteerism.

Plan of Action

On April 24th (the week of Global Youth Service Day), students who signed up previously with a permission slip, will get excused from school for a full day of service. For preparation, I had already made permission slips, and gotten it approved by the school administration. I wrote an email to all teachers notifying about the excused students on the day. Those participating students must make up their missing work with the advice of teacher. I emailed the local newspapers (Chaska Herald, School newspaper, and Chanhassen Villager) to help with publicity-- they agreed. I also emailed Impact Lives to invite them to our school; on that day, Impact Lives would set up the food packaging in the gym that would be one volunteering event. The students can choose among several volunteering events when signing up the permission slip. Once I receive all the permission slips, I will need to put them into groups, diversifying them with different ethnicity. I have planned to get the activities bus (for free) for transporting volunteering students to their designated locations. Several parents will help this event as chaperons.
