4 TO 5 MILLION PETS ARE EUTHANIZED IN SHELTERED EVERY YEAR!
I live in a community where there is a myriad of abandoned, abused, and neglected animals. Many of them are taken to our local shelters that have a very limited amount of space. Unfortunately, many of them are euthanized they day they are received due to lack of space in the shelters. I believe that the surplus of pets is partially due to the fact that the rates for spaying/neautering your pet in this area are very high.

why it's important:
It is Important to me and others in my community to provide this service for the well being of the animals and families in need in my community. Due to lack of availability or affordability in our area many dogs that cannot find homes are abandoned and become feral, often forming wild dog packs that then for protection reasons must be killed. Another fate the pets here often meet is that of a short shelter life that ends in premature euthenization because the shelters no longer have the room or the funds to keep them. I am trying to provide an alternative to euthenization by starting a sanctuary where I will keep each animal I recive until it can be spayed/neautered and rehomed appropriately.
the plan of action:
MY MISSION
First I want to explain to anyone out there who is unsure exactly what my sanctuary is about. it is a facility where animals are brought to live and be protected for the rest of their lives or until an appropriate home can be found for them. The resident animals will be given the opportunity to behave as naturally as possible in a protected environment. What distinguishes sanctuaries including my own from other institutions is the philosophy that the residents come first. Sanctuaries act on behalf of the residents, and the caregivers work under the notion that all animals in the sanctuary human and non-human are of equal importance.
~I would like to start a "No-Kill" animal sanctuary on my property, to house some of the animals that otherwise would be sentenced to be euthenized.
~I also have only a limited amount of space at the moment though I have goals set for expansion. I want to re home as many pets as I can, and spread the word about spaying/neutering pets.
~ Get information about how to provide my community with information and hopefully get a spay/neuter clinic established in the area.
~One of the most important missions of my sanctuary is to educate the public about the importance of spaying/neutering their animals and change the way that humans think of, and treat, non-human animals.
~Establish a dog park in the area.
how you can get involved:
I am still in the begining stages of my project. I am in great need of donations. I need outdoor kennels, doghouses, food, toys, tennis balls, Frisbees, leashes, collars, food and water bowls, grooming supplies, blankets, flea/tick medicine. I need people to sponsor our dogs and cats to be spayed/neutered. All donations are greatly appreciated, and remember the greatest donation you can make is a piece of your life to a loving companion.

I have been in contact with the Tennessee Animal Resource Center about their program Gotta Spay to Play this is the reply I received. I am meeting with one of their representatives soon to begin the process. "Basically, our program services low income individuals. It's called Gotta Spay to Play, and the goal is to have one of the programs in each county in Tennessee. Basically, we work with an existing vet outside of their normal business hours. For example, if they are not open on Saturday, we will reserve 1-2 Saturdays a month when the vet will come in and do spay and neuters for low income citizens. They are asked to donate what they can afford to donate. This allows us to fund the rabies vaccines that we also give the pet if they need it. The citizens receiving the service must provide us with a W-2 or proof of government assistance (i.e. welfare, TennCare, food stamp card, etc.) to receive the service for free. "
Wish me luck all I am one step closer to completing my goals! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

~Our first donations! Thank you Heidi for your much needed and appreciated donations. Congratulations on your new companion.
~ So, I ended up keeping the Lab Chow myself to keep him from being put down. He didn't answer to Jake so Ive been calling him Bailey and he likes it much better. He is 8-10 years old, UTD on all shots and friendly with kids and other animals. I need at little help paying for his vet bills for interceptor (heartworm meds) and joint care. I can provide vet name and number to confirm. her_shooting_star@yahoo.com
First, thanks for checking out my project. It's nice to find a fellow pet lover, trying to help. Our next event for us is a car wash, bake sale, and yard sale all in one. We plan to use the profits to fix up our club, but the remainer... IS COMING TO YOU!!! Keep up the good work and I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for doing this lifesaving project. Your idea for a sanctuary is so wonderful!! I hope it is really successful. And we really need to get the word out that spaying and neutering is so important to stop the killing of adoptable dogs and cats in shelters every day! Keep up the good work.
