The Problem
Each year, over 100,000 children die of cancer. As the president of West Ranch National Honor Society, I wanted to hold a community service event involving the entire student body of NHS in supporting childhood cancer research. We held five lemonade stands in the Santa Clarita Valley that donated directly to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is an organization that seeks to financially support cancer research and also children with cancer. The foundation relies on people across the country holding lemonade stands and donations. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $30 million to this day. One day, with the help of people across the world, a cure for cancer will be found.
Plan of Action
The planning period started in the Fall semester of 2009, right after the idea was approved by my advisor. I met frequently with my fellow officers, contacted the office at the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, and planned out dates. After holding an information meeting for our members, we contacted a local tee shirt business to design tee shirts for the day of the event. The next step was to confirm five locations in the Santa Clarita Valley. Our five locations that we ended up using were in front of stores such as Sport Chalet, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Trader Joes, Albertson’s and Whole Foods in the Santa Clarita Valley. Each location was to hold one lemonade stand, managed by two officers. On the day of the event, members went to their assigned locations and sought donations from shoppers and even people driving their cars. The event turned out to be a huge success. Our original goal was to raise $5000 overall, but we ended up more than doubling our goal by raising over $10,600.
