White Swan Summer Jam 2009

the problem:

Crime in our community and the underage drinking problem that has impacted our youth tremedously. My community is located on the Yakama Indain reservation and is a rarely small one at that. drinking is a main sorce of "popularism" here in the essence of our youth. By creating a 5 hour long prevvention and awareness event August 5th we hope to change the direction of the youth in my community.

vital stats:

people impacted:

350

people involved:

50

why it's important:

Summer Jam is important to me because I see the impact violence and alcohol has had, and continues to have, on my community. I would like to see a group of youth working together creating a better community for all. By getting this event up and running I hope to also recruite youth to join the community youth group I am trying to start.

the plan of action:

1.) create a Summer Jam committee (meets every tuesday and has outlined plans for the event)
2.)social Market the event (flyer, posters, radio announcements, door to door, car greeting)
3.) recruit youth (booth set up August 5th)
4.) Have much youth involved in the Summer Jam Event

how you can get involved:

Others can provide assistance with helping with the games, setting up booths, setting up chairs and picking up garbage.

project updates:

Meeting held on July 21st was very productive. 5 signs where made and hung up around town. The summer sewing class was fortunate to sew together many little hearts that will be given away at Summer Jam. The radio advertisement went well, recording went well and 5 of my peers were able to participate in that. We had our Tribal Police Chief attend along with multiple Agencies at our noon meeting. Yakima Nation Solid Waste will be providing flyers to be hung up around town. We surveyed the field and planned where to set everything.

We desided to have our next meeting on August 3rd, two days before Summer Jam, to make sure everything is good.
