Why is it so easy to get a license?

the problem:

For something that takes so many lives, driving, it is not hard to be allowed to receive your license. Because it is so easy, students don't take driving seriously. As a high school student I constantly hear stories of crashes, wrecks, and accidents. These stories are usually accommodated with laughs, giggles, and jokes. Students have died at our high school due to crashes and other vehicle related accidents, but outlooks don't seem to change. I don't believe that the state, or the country is following driving laws according to the changes of the current day. More and more cars are on the road now, then there ever was. Therefore, young drivers are more likely to be involved in a wreck.

why it's important:

In order to keep students and new drivers from getting into accidents, harsher laws need to be put into action. Not only should students need to have harder tests, with more questions, they need to be constantly reminded of possible consequences. Drivers must sit in on a meeting with drivers that were caught with DUIs and drivers who have caused car crashes, resulting in death. Students need to hear the stories of these people, and the way their lives have been effected. This can be made into requirements for graduation, and it will also allow judges to help students by mandating that DUI cases participate in such an activity. Students need to take psychological tests to determine if they are stable enough to operate a vehicle. Also, before receiving permits and licenses, students are subject to a drug and alcohol evaluation. Knowing that they can be tested at anytime will keep students away from illegal activities. Then, during their first years of driving, they are to be subjects to random testing. Once the student receives their license, they must come in and retake the permit test, and driving test, every 5-10 years until they become seniors when they will be required to take the test every 2-5.

the plan of action:

Knowing that this is not a joke, might help students realize that driving is an absolute privilege. Not only will this reduce the number of deaths, crashes, and accidents, but this will create jobs. New DMV offices will need to be built, and new people will need to be hired to administer the tests. Although, the prompt states that the idea should be fun for students, I believe that's the problem. Students are having too much fun in driving and are not taking this seriously. In order to make a real change, harsher punishments need to be administered, and the country needs to follow up on new, and old drivers, instead of handing them their license and only stepping in when the accident has already occurred. Please help keep America alive and safe by considering my idea.

project updates:

07/30/2009

I held a car wash, and handed out bumper stickers. I also held a blood drive in honor of a student who passed away due to a hit and run. And lastly, I held a Christmas caroling party at the local highrise for senior citizens and taught them about how to be a good pedestrian as well as careful senior drivers.

I agree completely! It is crazy how many people are on the roads, and new laws should be put into action to decrease this number. I mean teens initially believe nothings gonna happen to them, so I think it should be harder for people to get their license!

I agree with you both that it is a problem, however I know many students who all have trouble recieving their license. So maybe instead of making it harder to get your license, they should have yearly tests to refresh your memory of proper driving. That way all drivers are up to date on the rules of the road.

I think that this is smart and i believe in this.

wow, this is quite an ambitious project!! i totally agree that the prospect of my friends and i driving is scary... my mom's biggest hesitation toward moving out to the suburbs was the idea that kids would be driving at such a young age. im going to the dmv to get my permit in 3 weeks because my family feels more comfortable with me driving than my friends driving me around, but im scared to drive for sure!! there definitely need to be reforms that make teen driving accidents less prevalent, and i totally support your efforts to change the way teens think about driving!

exactly if i lose one family member (included friends) then the law basically doesn't care
