The Problem
The garden was started in a community that values agriculture and education. The project is trying to motivate kids to garden and to grow their own food. It strives to show kids how fun and fulfilling it can be to do those things and it gives them the skills and knowledge to put them in a position to pursue those goals. It also allows volunteers to witness the hope and beauty that exists in community-based gardens.
Plan of Action
The garden project started small. I woke up one day and decided that this was something that I really wanted to do. I approached the principal about the idea and, after getting her approval, solicited donations from local donors. I didn't just receive donations, I also recieved their enthusiasm, which was a blessing.
The project grew to include about fifteen volunteers and over fifty kids each week. The "Garden Club" is optional for the kids and their involvement is a testament to how rewarding the experience has been for them. I would like to double the size of the garden in the next year, increasing it from four raised beds to eight. I would like to create a space to grow perennials such as strawberries and asparagus. I would also like to line the playground fence with heritage raspberry bushes and plant a few apple trees in the corner.
