The Problem

In Holland, Michigan and specifically in the Holland Public School District there are a considerable amount of families in need of financial assistance. Within the Holland Public Schools over half of the entire district's student population qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some students cannot afford proper winter apparel this upcoming cold season. In Holland, the temperature stays below freezing for two-three months of the year and can drop up to ten feet of snow. Students continually walk to school in whatever their family can afford at the time being. I have personally seen second a grader walking home in a blizzard with a oversized wind breaker on and a baseball cap to keep warm. These students not only need but deserve to have winter apparel for their well being.

Plan of Action

I have already researched the district and identified the total number of students that are candidates for possible assistance. I have worked with the District's "Community Connections" officer who oversees student aid out of school and asked him for ideas to distribute the winter apparel. I have presented the idea to my school's "Calling All Colors" committee and they have agreed to support me whether it be advertising or donating their extra winter apparel. I also have compiled a list of roughly 1000 local organizations that have donated monetary gifts to the Holland Public Schools in the past and am waiting for financial aid (hopefully from the youth 2 youth grant) to start advertising my mission throughout my school district and community.
