The Problem

Hello! My name is Govil Gupta, and I am a sophomore in high school. I founded Wonder Writers in January of 2008, as a freshman in high school. As I was growing up, I loved to write, but noticed there were few places where I could submit and share my writing. Also, I knew that writing was beneficial to students of all ages. Therefore, I wanted to create a portal for students to submit and share their writing, as well as motivate them to write. In addition to encourage writing, I also wanted to give back to the community by donating to charity. Through this combined vision, Wonder Writers was born.

Why It's Important

Wonder Writers is an organization dedicated to provide a portal for students K-12 to submit and share their writing. Students go to the website, www.wonderwriters.com. Here they can view the topic by the appropriate age group and the form to submit their writing. We accept Essays and Poetry. There are many more feature available on the website as well. After typing their entry and filling out basic information, they hit submit. Once we receive the entry in our database, and the contest is over, we hold a judging party. We have judges that are Executive Screen Writers from Nickelodeon, journalists, teachers, directors/CEOs, firefighters, and even college students pursuing English majors to help judge the entries. Next, we compile a book and send it to a publishing company. This book includes all the entries we received and also highlights the winners' entries. This way the kids can actually see their writing in print! It is a great motivator! Last but not least, we hold an awards ceremony. We invite all of the young writers' and their families to attend. We announce the winners at the ceremony. Next, we hand out amazing prizes. 1st place receives an Apple iPod, 2nd Place receives $25 Barnes and Noble Gift Card, and 3rd Place receives a $15 Barnes and Noble Gift Card! This is yet another way we encourage them to write! Finally, the books we published are available for sale for $10 each, so the writers can share with their family and friends. All profits made from the books go directly to a charity. We choose the charity by holding a poll amongst the writers. This clearly addresses many problems in our community. First and foremost, we provide an outlet for young writers to share their writing which solves a problem. Also, we encourage them to care about education and motivate them to write via prizes and getting published. In addition, we help out other needy charities by fund raising money for them.

The Plan Of Action

I believe that I have made a big impact in my community. We have held 4 contests now, and have over 500 entries between the four. Our fifth contest will launch soon. The idea of Wonder Writers was actually born in Spring of 2007. I spent the summer of 2007 building the website and solidifying the process and idea. In the fall of 2007, everything was ready and functional. I approached some teachers at my school, and they were very enthusiastic about the project. They offered to judge and give extra credit to students who participate. We were ready to launch. In early January of 2008, we launched our first contest. The themes were Bravery for Elementary School, Growing Up for Middle School, and Choices for High School. Soon, the word was spreading from school to school about Wonder Writers. In fact, the local county newspaper, the OC Register even featured an article about Wonder Writers. When the contest ended in March of 2008, we had over 100 entries! After the judging process was completed, we held the 1st Awards Ceremony at the local library. The room was packed! Some of the judges and sponsors gave marvelous motivational speeches, and talked about how writing is useful in the real world. We handed out iPods and the Gift Cards, and the kids were ecstatic! Finally, everyone was really proud to see their writing published. This made a huge impact on many parents, teachers, and children. In fact, a mother of one child told me, "Thank you so much for doing this. My kid never used to write, but after hearing that he could win an iPod, he thought he'd give it a try. Now he loves to write, and his teachers have noticed it too!" This showed me that Wonder Writers had made an impact in the community. We raised money for charity and donated it to CHOC Hospital and The Dylan Bradshaw Memorial Fund. For the next contest, I wanted to make even a bigger impact. As Earth Day was readily approaching, we decided to have the topic be regarding the environment. The theme for our second contest was: My Plan to Save my Planet. This contest was even better than the last once. We had nearly 100 entries, and had lots of fun organizing this contest. A local restaurant sponsored us, so we held the ceremony in their courtyard. We had pizza, salads, pasta, breadsticks, and soda for everyone! This time the CEO of Team Kids, one of our partners, gave a speech about writing. She did a great job and her nonprofit organization has helped Wonder Writers spread the word. Once again, the kids loved their prizes and were amazed by the books. We are still receiving orders for books for the second contest, and will donate the money to a environment related charity. This contest had multiple impacts. First, it encouraged kids to write of course. But also, they were more aware of their surroundings and promised to stay green. Our third contest was very successful as well. The themes were Humor and I'm Thankful For, and we had over 100 entry submissions. The best part, however, was that we had screen writers from Nickelodeon and Emmy award winning writers to help judge the entries! Some shows which they have worked on have included George Lopez and a 2010 Jimmy Neutron Spin-off called Planet Sheen. We raised lots of money for charity and the kids had a great time. We recently concluded our fourth contest, the Power of Youth, which ended with over 200 entries and raised the most money yet! We have also been featured in more newspapers now, such as India Journal, India West, and Irvine World News, as well as the Orange County Register, and also on television on ABC News! In addition, Wonder Writers' founder Govil Gupta received the Nestle Very Best in Youth award, given to only 25 students in the nation. This coming year, we plan to make Wonder Writers bigger and better. My goal is to spread it to more schools across Orange County, and give back more to the community. Recently, we have had entries from across America - and even the world. We have received entries from New York, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, and internationally from India and Indonesia.

How Can Others Get Involved?

Everyone can help out Wonder Writers! If you are a kid or teenager, tell your teachers, parents, and friends about Wonder Writers. Tell them to visit www.wonderwriters.com, and they can find updated info on the website. If you are a parent or teacher, please encourage your kids to participate in Wonder Writers. It is very beneficial for them. Also, teachers can help us judge(even if you live outside of Southern California)! Email us at volunteers@wonderwriters.com for details. If you know anyone that would be qualified to judge, please tell them to email us at volunteers@wonderwriters.com. If you own a business or know someone who does, please contact us because we are always looking for sponsors. We have received entries from New York, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, and internationally from India and Indonesia. ) ) [field_others_involved] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [value] => Everyone can help out Wonder Writers! What's the problem you are trying to solve?:

Why is it important to you?:

What's your plan of action?:
What a great way to get kids motivated to write! Seeing as writing is a skill that continues to develop throughout your lifetime, it's really beneficial to encourage kids to embrace their writing skills as well as to have fun!
