Sea Island Habitat for Humanity is currently planning on transforming their storm water retention pond into a functioning wetland habitat. One of the goals of the project is to provide a teaching tool for the community in which youth and adults can experience the beauty and function of wetlands from a safe and easy location. The project will be using native wetland plants to provide food and habitat sources for local animals as well as migratory birds. To reduce the human impact and increase access, an observation deck will be built and concealed with a bird blind. Lesson plans will be available for any interested group, provided by Project WET. The project will be taking place at the front of a Habitat for Humanity community located off of Brownswood Road on rural John’s Island. Area schools (with the exception of one prep school) host predominately minority students and have a high drop out rate, which could be mitigated by using environmental based learning. Studies have found improved behavior, attendance and attitudes with the use of nature-based programs. In addition, children who are exposed to the natural world early are more likely to protect it as adults. With a little help, this project can become a reality for the John’s Island community.
