Workout for those Without

the problem:

We were raising money for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, which is a homeless shelter in Atlantic City. More than 600,000 families and 1.35 million children experience homelessness in America! Domestic Violence is the most prevalent cause of homelessness for women and families. The Atlantic City Rescue Mission serves over 3000 homeless people each year and houses over 225 men and single women with children each night.

why it's important:

Helping 100 is a service-learning club that focuses on homelessness in America. The club pledged 100 volunteer hours at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, created 100 iCare packages, which were backpacks filled with necessary toiletry items to be distributed to one hundred families living at the Atlantic City Homeless shelter. Other activities included: • Taking 24 women and children from the Atlantic City Rescue Mission on a trip to the Cape May Zoo, have a picnic lunch and give each child a gift • I maintains the Helping 100 web page (www.helping100.com), designed to promote awareness of homelessness and to encourage all to help end homeless and hunger. • Participating in the Turkey Trot for the mission, • Selling Macys’ Cards for the Homeless (raising $500), • Running a iCare Food drive that collected over 5000 food items for the shelter • Raising $1500 for the AC Rescue mission in our fundraiser, “Workout For those Without” at Mainland Fitness Gym, Linwood.

the plan of action:

On March 20, 2008, Helping 100 ran a fund raiser entitled Workout for those Without. We worked with the owners of Mainland Fitness Gym - in Linwood, NJ and planned the fund raiser together. They let us use their gym for the day and we invited gym members, Northfield School and Mainland Regional High School and community members to workout to raise money. For every minute the members worked out - someone would pledge $1 to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, a shelter for homeless men, women and children. All Participants had these options of cardio: Spin Bikes, Tread Mills, Step Mills, Stationary Bikes, Stair Masters, Rowing Machines, Elliptical Machines, Recumbent Bikes, 8:30-9:30am Yoga Class, 5:15-6:15pm Pilates, 6:15-7:15pm Body Sculpting Class! The planning was somewhat simple: 1. Meet with Gym for sponsorship 2. Create a flyer, distribute the flyer 3. Get media attention - sent information to local press 4. Collect sponsor forms at the gym 5. Workout! It was great fun! We raised $1500.00 for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.
