The Problem
People are dying in the Middle East, a conflict that has been going on for generations. Yet, even closer to home in our own neighborhoods, the avarice generated by this conflict is propagated and renewed daily. This is what we are seeking to address, stop, and redirect. Change begins in people's hearts. Without a change of heart, rocks will continue to be thrown and hate will continue to breed. It is the goal of this project to open avenues of trust and understanding so that the cycle of hatred can be stopped and the path of healing can be revealed, one person, one falafel at a time.
Plan of Action
We have found a tool and a niche that has yet to be utilized and properly addressed: The Shared Plate. There is something special about sharing food from the same central dish, a bond is formed. This creates a common ground that fosters trust and understanding, allowing participants to focuses not on the past and our differences but on the future and our ability to work together in building it. By building a model to allow others to have One Falafel meetings elsewhere it is our goal to address the issues at hand in a truly grassroots way. Not through a meeting of 1000, but 100 meetings of ten.
We are realistic about the goals, we are not going to stop the violence today, but we can plant the seed of peace in a few people's hearts everyday. In the end, that may make all the difference.
Already we have seen it at our meetings. A brief example is a 70 year old self-identifying Palestinian man and a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor openly praising each other for their words and sharing an embrace. That is a true example of how powerful this model can be.
