The Problem

The purpose of the HOUSE Program is to assist “at-risk” (at-risk off dropping out of school) young adults and battered and abused or formerly homeless women obtain a post secondary education. The program provides a residence for students attending West Virginia State University or Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College. While in the program, residents are taught basic living skills, study skills and the program provides group activity when funding is available.

Plan of Action

Since the program is self-sustaing and does not receive funds from the WVSU or KVCTC the budget for the HOUSE Program, at times, can be extremely tight. The facility is in desperate need of new computers; the two that we have are over 13 years old and constantly have problems. I would also like to use the funds to assist residents with school expenses such as books, paper, pens, ect. Lastly, if there are any additional funds, I would use them to provide group activities that encourage team building and problem solving. If the program receives grant funds from Bic I would be willing to let the residents shave my head with the new BIC® Flex4 and send a video to Bic. That is how committed I am to the program and the success of the residents. The HOUSE Program has assisted over 57 students since its inception in 2002 and over the past three years has seen 14 residents graduate with an Associates or Bachelors degree.
