The Problem
During my sophomore year, I accepted an offer to be a WyldLife leader. WyldLife is a non-denominational youth group for junior high students. We have a great team of high school leaders who plan bible studies and fun activities for the students. We meet two mornings a week to pray for the kids; then, we go to the seventh and eighth grade hallways to interact with them. We also attend a week long summer camp and a fall retreat with them. We all try to be Christ-loving role models. I have built positive relationships with many of the junior high girls; my goal is to share my faith with each of them. Junior high can be an unsettling and confusing time, and I hope my presence as a high school leader will make this time a little easier on the girls.
Plan of Action
I recently realized how much of an influence I am in their lives. For example, one morning before school I was mingling in the seventh grade hallway, and I noticed a girl that looked sad, so I approached her. I simply asked her what was wrong. Then, I listened and gave her a hug. The next day, she thanked me in an unexpected email. She said it made a big difference that I was there to listen and comfort her. This really touched my heart.
I have also been told by one of the girl’s parents that I am her daughter’s role model. The mother said that her daughter really looks up to me. I feel honored to have such a big responsibility. Knowing that I make an impact on her life reassures me that I will be able to share my faith with her.
