The Problem
The number of African-Americans entering UCLA is only a small fraction of the African-American population in LA. UCLA is a public institution, yet it does not reflect the public that lives around it. The question that is to be answered is why? Why are African-Americans not in college? Why do African-Americans not apply, and why do African-Americans not get in? The number of competitive applicants must increase. Getting that number to increase is the struggle.
Plan of Action
The plan has two parts. One is the part in which students come to UCLA to get a talk from a financial aid expert in order for the students to realize that money should not be the reason not to go to college. Also, they will listen to a panel of African-American students to hear their stories. This will allow the students to hopefully relate to the college students and inspire them to go to college. The students will get college tours and will watch a documentary about the Brown v Board case, which will be followed by a discussion so that they see that college was not always an option, but now that it is, have we taken full advantage of the opportunity. Part 2 is where college students mentor these students to help them become more college ready. Help can be provided to seniors with college apps and juniors with SAT help, but the targeted group is freshman because they still have time to develop into a competitive student. With this, I hope to make a change, no matter the size, in these high school students lives to let them know that they too can go to college. College is a real possibility for everyone.
