The Problem

The commnity that I helped was the community of Yosemite National Park. In the park, backpackers and other visitors are supposed to used already established fire rings and campsites, but many make their own. If these sites are too large or too close to the trail or water, they can be damaging to the environment in the park. Our group was trying to fix this problem, restoring illegal campsites and replenishing the natural habitat.

Plan of Action

The trip that I took to fix campsites in Yosemite National Park was with the Student Conservation Association. I signed up through the organization, and once I was placed in Yosemite I went and purchased all of the tools that I would use for the project. Upon arrival, our group rationed food and started to backpacka along the trail. Over the 31 days that we were backpacking, we fixed over 250 fire rings. Periodically, more food was brought it by horseback. With our help, the Yosemite National Park wilderness is in better condition, the campsites that we cleaned/removed are thriving.
