The Problem
I am solving two major problems. The first is young elementary school children who are struggling learning to read. By bringing my dog dog "Raisin" (a rescue dog) to work with the children, they have gone from reading below grade level to reading above grade level and are now confident, happy thriving students. They also learn about being responsible pet owners and to rescue pets from the story I published. The money my book makes is donated to local rescues and animal shelters.
Plan of Action
1. I first rescued a dog (a Pug I named "Raisin")that needed a loving home.
2. I trained Raisin to pass a test and become a licensed therapy dog.
3. I took Raisin to a local inner-city school where many young students were Hispanic and couldn't read at grade level. I asked them to read a book to Raisin and they only were interested in asking me questions about Raisin and not reading so I wrote, photographed and published a book about Raisin and his "wags to riches" life and how he overcame obstacles and went from a DUMB-DOG to a hero as a TAIL-WAGGIN' Tutor helping kids learn to read. The kids loved the book and started thriving both in reading ability and confidence. They went from hating school to loving it! Behavior problems have also diminished since they don't want to lose their chance to READ WITH RAISIN.
