I want to make art a positive outlet for other young people. For the past five months I, along with my High School Chapter of the National Arts Honor Society, have been meeting with a group of 3rd and 4th graders at W.G. Pearson Elementary School every week. At the beginning of this semester we started the Tiger Art Club with students selected by the art teacher there. We did art projects, such as water color landscapes and hand painted clay flower pots. At the end of the school year we held Pearson's first "Celebrate the Arts Night" where the kids presented their projects and sold some of their work to raise money for next year. Unfortunately, we were not able to raise the kind of money we had hoped for. I would love to be able to take them on a trip to the Nasher Art Museum and the North Carolina Museum of Art. I think this program could potentially have a real impact on how the students view art and the opportunities involved in arts.
