25why it's important:
It's important because I don't live in a large city where homelessness is evident. Many people don't realize that homelessness exists on Cape Cod, and there are stigmas associated with homeless people. The number of homeless children and mentally ill people is alarming, and we hope to make people understand that those people need help, not discrimination.
the plan of action:
We host breakfasts and overnight retreats to make youth aware of the homelessness situation in our community. We educate youth about other opportunities to help.We serve breakfast to residents of shelters and people who come off the streets and we distribute lunches as well. The organization started when my friends and I had the idea to replicate a program we had been to in Boston. Over the summer, I met with shelter representatives and homeless indivudals to create the organization, which hosted its first overnight in September of 2007.
