The Problem
New York City, the country’s largest city, is now home to more than 180 different language and ethnic groups. With such a diverse crowd, disagreements and conflict are inevitable. YouthBridge-NY is paving the way for our future generation of leaders to be ready and able to handle the conflicts that may arise. YouthBridge-NY trains talented, motivated New York City teen fellows from diverse backgrounds to master the skills they need to be the next generation of professionals in the melting pot that is New York City. Through workshops, meetings with today’s top city leaders, and community services activities, our fellows gain the leadership skills they need to succeed in one of the world’s most culturally diverse and dynamic cities. The Fellowship is made up of 35 student leaders, who are selected to part of this program for 2-3 years. The application for next year’s fellows will begin in March 2009.
Plan of Action
This year’s committees are:
1: Shared Resources for a Shared Future: Fellows hold their own fundraiser, create an RFP, and give out mini-grants to various organizations.
2: Engaging Workplace Diversity & Corporate Internship: Fellows meet with professionals to learn about corporate social responsibility in preparation for their six-week summer internship. Placements are in a variety of sectors, including law, business, non-profit, and government.
3: Diversity Lens and Youth Summit: Fellows will spend the first half of the year working with a professional photographer to gain an appreciation of cross cultural perspective through a camera lens. The latter half of the year will be spent planning the Youth Summit, a conference for over 300 high school students based on issues of diversity and community.
4: Social Marketing and Media: Fellows learn how to use the media and internet effectively in order to promote social change by creating their own videos, press releases, and newsletter.
