The Problem

Our Annual "Feed a Hungry Student" Golf Tournament raises money to help create a school lunch program at each of our 12 YouthBuild Charter School of California sites. Because our school serves young adults between the ages of 16 to 24 who have previously dropped out of traditional high schools, the vast majority of our students are over 18 and, therefore, do not qualify for any federal student lunch program. Unfortunately over 30% of our students are living well below the poverty line and can't afford the essential nutrients their bodies need and will go hungry without this program. It costs less than $3.00 to feed a hungry student for one day. With over 1,000 students throughout our 12 sites and 185 school days, we'd need to raise over $100,000 to feed those hungry students for a year. Our immediate goal is to raise $30,000, which would allow us to buy 10,000 school lunches.

Plan of Action

Our Annual Golf Tournament has been raising money for our "Feed a Hungry Student" Fund since its initiation in 2010. In its first year, we started small, but were able to raise $500 for the Fund. The next year, we tripled that amount to $5000. This year, we're hoping to raise even more money so that the program can truly flourish. Our immediate goal is to raise $30,000 to pay for 10,000 student lunches. We're hoping that through a combination of corporate sponsorships for our Golf Tournament, participants signing up to golf for hungry students, and money we raise through our Silent Auction and Dinner at the event, we can reach, and even exceed that goal.
