Juvenis

Juvenis is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that my brothers Federico, Nicholas and I founded in California in 2004. In short, we aim to elevate and empower immigrant youth in the United States by providing them with critical educational and professional guidance and resources for them to succeed. The fundamental problem, is a general lack of awareness on the part of immigrant youth who have been incepted into American society sometime during their later years, with little or no proficiency in English, American culture, or their brand new educational setting.

Cambridge After School Program

Cambridge houses a large community of low-income and immigrant families. Youth from these families often do not receive the help they need outside of school because parents work long hours and do not speak English fluently. These young people need help with their homework and a safe environment in which to work, learn, and play. Through the Cambridge Youth Enrichment Program, an academic summer program, some of these needs are addressed during the summer time, but parents were left without a term-time equivalent when the summer was over.

Violins for Greater Success

My county is a very rural county with very limited fine arts and culture. The town is just a square of businesses. We have one high school. Some of the children and people that live here never make it far outside our county lines. I have been playing violin for 7 years and love the instrument. I would like to introduce 4th graders in my county to playing the violin in hopes that this might spark an interest in building a fine arts program in our schools. Our superintendent and the principal of the school I intend to teach at greatly support the idea.

Oasis Literacy Project

The women and children in Paterson are among the poorest among us, and have very little resources. While the mothers come to Oasis to get an education and to help them get "on their feet" their children are cared for on-site. These children have very little exposure to literature. This program seeks to have an ongoing collection of literature avaialble at Oasis. With time, programs such as and including ours will allow for more and more less than fortunate children to become smarter and more developmentally sound due to an easier access to books.

after school community center for students

I want to organize a community organization that helps with after school programs for those who are in poverty and are identified for at-risk. I vision a place where students can go after school for various things(examples: homework help, computer usage and training, fitness programs, nutrition programs, music lessons, dance lessons, career education, work training, counseling, game rooms to keep them off the street, movie nights, teacher volunteers to help students, and etc..,) Our community is very small, a poverty stricken area, and teens here are greatly in need of help.

Capoeira Cidadã

According to the movie Favela Rising, between the years 1987 and 2001, 463 youth were murdered in Israel and Palestine combined. During the same period, 3,937 youth were murdered in a single city in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. In the ongoing war, police and trafícantes (drug dealers) often recruit from the same population of undereducated and poor young men, offering a choice between impunity and low pay as a police officer, or fast cash and a short life as a drug trafficker.

FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering and Science)

FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering and Science) is a student-run educational and community outreach program that seeks to improve female participation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects. The centerpiece of the program is an annual, free-of-charge capstone event (held each spring) that invites Durham-area girls in 4th-6th grade to participate in science, math and engineering activities led by female Duke students, faculty and scientists.

Bloom Youth Center

The community which we plan to serve is Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The town is small with many youth and a large university. Unfortunately, for youth, there is not much to do in the town which results in some of the youth getting into trouble. Many of the towns outlying communities are impoverished and have very few youth centered facilities. The teen birth rate is very high in Bloomsburg, there is a moderate teen crime rate and many teens end up taking dead end and blue collar jobs even though there is a university within arms reach.

The Children's Bilingual Theater

Jordan Schwartz noticed that kids learning Spanish at school didn't have a place to practice it. She created The Children's Bilingual Theater, which puts on plays for schools and communities encouraging others to learn different languages. She won a BRICK Award in 2006.

NOLA Adventure After School Club

As Jersey City's public schools strive to meet core curriculum standards as well as No Child Left Behind benchmarks, teachers are now more than ever "teaching for the test." These guidelines put added pressure on the school district and, as a result, there is less of an emphasis put on liberal arts. For social change to be attainable in our community, our young students must be challenged creatively. Expressing one's individuality through art and music is essential to a well-rounded education.
