Over 150 million children in the world (age 5-14) are deprived of education due to poverty, slavery, sexual discrimination, racial discrimination, racism and religious intolerance. The cost of educating each child in the developing world is about $1 per month per child. Several global studies show that educating a girl to at least a fifth grade education level, is the most significant factor in impoverished societies such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Famous hip-hop and rap artist Bubba Sparxxx sang in his song, Ms. New Booty – “Booty booty booty, rockin’ everywhere.” However, when it comes to music programs across schools in America, there is absolutely no booty rocking anywhere at all. The New York Times reports that new emphasis on standardized testing and budget cuts pose a major threat to arts programs across schools, where 70% of public school music budgets are externally funded.

We heard on the radio that most low income children do not have any books of their own. We researched this and found that low income children have zero to two books compared to two hundred books for kids that are better off. We know how great it is to have books available to read and enjoy so we decided to start a program to read to children and let them choose their own book.
